Excellent, well worth the money!

I am running the beta of Mac OS High Sierra. This works perfectly with that OS. It is truly plug and play and seamlessly works with time machine. I backed up my Mac in about 15 minutes. Granted I don't have a ridiculous amount of files, but that's faster than any other hard drive I've tried. This drive looks durrable, but the design on the outside may be easily scratched. One other thing is if you're looking for an SSD hard drive, this isn't it. But it is an excellent standard hard drive!

What I needed.

In any Art school, we mainly use Mac (and I have a MacBook Air as my laptop) as it usually has the best editing software on there along with loading time being efficient. I bought this as I will be needing an external hard drive for the next four year in college making videos and animating in class. So far, the drive works well. I did a lot of research on what drives to use and since I need one specifically for Mac, this was perfect. WD usually has a good long-term history for good drives so I got this. So far so good.***While it is programmed ready for Mac, hence why it says "for Mac," you can re-format the hard drive to make it useful on Windows too although it's quite a process and they give you instructions how to do it. I am unsure if it can be used interchangeably with Mac and Windows. The glossy side of the drive is easily scratch-able and a fingerprint magnet, so I recommend buying a hard case along with purchase!

Great! Very tiny about the size of a notecard

Great! Very tiny about the size of a notecard. works well and that little weird design seems to have a function, as it keeps the hard drive from sliding on slanted surfaces and provides a very decent grippy surface. I had an old WD from back in like 2007 or 2008 (and it still works flawlessly) but just wanted a new one. the old one even works with my windows and Mac without any additional drivers needed. hard drive came on point with 1.01 TB (I hate when they short you) so another thing I was pleased about. functions fast and works well.

Works Really Well, But Ugly

This is a very effective device to have if you have large photo or video files. For its size, it holds a huge chunk of data, and USB 3 is reasonably fast for transfers. I also like very much the security features that come with it – although the password dialog box often doesn't open automatically as it should, requiring you to get at password entry via WD Utilities. Only other thing...I know it's likely that the people who designed this drive think the exterior is really neat, but I don't. The earlier design with only 3TB capacity looked much more trustworthy with metal on the exterior, instead of the all plastic housing for this drive. But bottom line, this drive works well, in spite of it being ugly. I've had 19 different Western Digital compact drives for Mac over the past few years, and only one of them failed after very heavy use.

Plug in, and walk away!

Note: If you read nothing else, you can get your user manual here: wd.com/docs (I read it in the fine print in the material that arrives with the drive)I've waited WAY too long to back up my Mac computers. I remember reformatting drives in the past, and it was no fun. I decided to pick up the 4TB version of this drive and give it a try. I knew to expect the first backup to take a while, so that was no problem. What I liked was that I was able to plug in, and the time machine immediately opened to start a back up. I just waited until it started, then walked away times... I am now using this as a time machine for two different mac computers. After backing up two computers, I've still got 3.65 of 4TB free. I thought about getting the 2TB, but am now glad that I did not. I did purchase the $9.99 warranty through Amazon, only because it includes data recovery (wasn't clear if the WD warranty would). I do expect this will stop working one day, but I think its the best of the devices I reviewed. I hope to never need to use the warranties, but I'm glad they are there.I'd get this you have even ONE Mac Device. I don't feel a need to backup my Android phone because I have google photos, and much of my other stuff is backed up on Google Drive. Finally, I stored it in an old external hard drive case. Its super tiny, so it can be neatly stashed on a bookcase. I'm sure you've heard its important to go gentle on your drive.Hope this works well for you!

A piece of junk, warning!!

I thought it would be a good idea to retire my desktop Iomega back-up drive. It works fine with Time Machine on the Mac, but takes up space and must be plugged in. I have three Passport for the Mac drives (the tiny siver ones that were popular), one for three computers at home and work, and they are nice. This one, though... a disaster. Tried to use Time Machine and after only partial back-up, just went dead. Tried again, and same. Now can't get it to be recognized, plug in, then nothing. So, tried on two other computers, one nothing, one sees it first time, then not again. Tried Mac disk repair, and found lots of problems. So, want to just send it back, but now some of my folders are on the drive and I cannot connect to delete them!!! I would not send it back with my files on there!! What a mess! What a piece of junk! Can this possibly be the same drive as the baby silvers, just in another case? So, I have an expensive paper weight. **So, you wonder, why did I not just keep my Iomega big drive? Well, I would like to go back in time (Time Machine), and not place the order. But, my Iomega is now attached again and doing its job. Warning, skip this drive.
