Very Good for Intermediate Players

It's really helpful to know basic chord theory and diatonic structure to use this book as there is no theoretical explanation of the changes. This is my impression from playing through about 30 songs I knew and looking at most of the songs.I found some good changes in this book, although many of the chord substations are fairly standard ones like adding substitute ii - V's or tritones, but some of these are still great like when he adds a tritone in all ALL the Things You Are in first 2 measures so that /F-7 /Bb-7 / becomes /F-7 Bb#11 /Bb-7 E13/ Its just a tritone, but I never thought of doing that in this song.Quite a few of the charts he alters seem to be older simpler chord charts and he adds chord changes that already exist in my real book. For example, When I fall in love chart he alters has only a /EbM7 / / chord for first two measures and then he changes it to standard I VI II V by adding /EbM7 C7 / F-7 Bb7/ chords to it, but those chords are already in my real book version of this chart and so standard. Some Songs like Yesterdays mostly just get some altered chords and a D+9 simply becomes a D9sus D+9 a pretty standard change. However I don't use this change enough, so part of the benefit of this book is to remind you to use themA good change I know but wouldn't have used in Don't Blame Me is to take a /C /G/ and make it a /E-7 EbM7 /D-11 DbM#11/ . Its basically inserting a iii Vi ii V and making tritones of the vi and V.Other songs get chord changes I don't really understand at this point and I will look at them more later. This book doesn't completely reharmonize the chord structure progressions for a tune which I guess the book wasn't aiming at.

Good source for standards' info

Review Prochord Changes Vol I and II by Frank Mantoooth“Prochord Changes” Volumes I and II by Frank Mantooth are excellent sources for standard tunes, lyrics, chord and alternate chord changes. Each Volume contains 150 standards, giving us a good swath of the more commonly played tunes in the Great American Song Book. The books are very well formatted. The staffs are large and clear. The note notation is large and clear. The chord notation is large and clear, with the standard chords in bold and alternate chords in lighter print. As far as I can tell, the chord selections are standard and not overly complicated. The entire book is single staffed. Every tune starts at the top of a page. Most tunes have two pages, a few tunes have three pages. This makes for easy reading. The tunes are positioned in each volume alphabetically. The binding seems strong and the book lays flat. In the front of each volume is an index so one can quickly find a tune.Quite a few of the tunes have playing tips and harmonic analysis. A few tunes have historical annotations by Dr. David Baker. These volumes are outstanding work from an excellent pianist.

Awesome book

This book as so many pop songs and the gray chords are a little hard to read but most of them add a nice touch to the songs.

Best Chord Changes

I own a couple dozen Fake Books with altered chord suggestions and find the chord substitutions by Frank Mantooth as the all-around best available.

Mantooth’s Pro Chord Changes.

Very clear easy to read lead sheets. The reharmonised chords are in grey and I would have preferred them in red, as in other books by Mantooth. But it’s a minor complaint because the work requires a more careful study anyway in order to gain the full benefit.
