Not a beginner book!

I very much like this book, but unless you understand piano levels this can be very misleading. Easy does not mean beginner. This is the equivalent of a level 3 book. Don't buy this for a very beginner child or person just barely learning. Once my kids advance they will enjoy learning these songs but for now they can't do it.

Very Easy Piano! Arranged well by the Masterful Dan Coates, but too simple for anyone beyond 5 finger piano.

Perhaps, it’s possible that I underestimated myself but I found this book to be incredibly easy. These songs were easy to master upon sight reading. I spent a lot of time reading the reviews on this book because I wanted to add something new to my collection of piano music but I also wanted to be able to play it. I took lessons for 10 years when I was younger, but stopped taking lessons when I was about 18 and I am 28 now. Up until about 3 months ago, I didn’t have a piano/keyboard that I could regularly use but now I do and I wanted to start playing some awesome tunes again!I wish it was legal to take pictures of the music, just to give people an idea of the difficulty of the music before-hand. I am aware that easy piano is for the intermediate player, but this book could easily be played by someone a little less than intermediate, in my opinion. I also realize that this goes against what most of the reviewers have said about this book, be warned, if you have ever had the ability to play music as it was written and not an easier form of it, this book will be too easy for you! Even if you’re rusty by a few years.Basically what you’re looking at in terms of difficulty:-No more than 2 octaves above or below middle C-Simple time signatures and keys. Most songs are in the key of C with some accidentals thrown into the mix.-No more than a few notes played at a given time, mostly one note at a time. Minimal chords. The songs sound like what they’re supposed to be, but they also sound like they’re missing something. They’re too simplified sounding to sound like their actual counterpart. That being said, Dan Coates is one of the best arrangers out there. If you’re just starting to learn, but are beyond the 5 finger piano music this book would be an excellent cost effective choice. The songs are familiar and you could easily be plunking your way through these in no time. I’m just a little disappointed because I was led to believe that the music would be harder than it actually was.

Making Piano Fun and Interesting for Kids

I really only concentrated on the Danny Elfman theme for "Corpse Bride" and perused the ostinato opening of the version of John Williams's "Superman" theme and was pleased with both actually as wonderful material for school-age children who express an interest in playing the piano. These two alone make a good contrast in terms of introducing children to contrasting musical approaches ("Corpse Bride" for arpeggiated legato flow and "Superman" for rhythmic thirds). It is fun! It seems that each piece is a little lesson unto itself. The "Corpse Bride" theme, though "easy" to play, sounds lush and evocative, altogether capturing the gothic poignancy of the piece. You have to work at getting the notes "under the fingers," of course, but it is all there, and these simplfied versions allow the player to see the shapes of the music more readily, making reading music an exploration rather than a chore, which is what it always should be first and foremost.

Love the 4 beautiful ballads!

I originally bought it for "Hedwig's Theme" but I'm not a fan of that particular arrangement. However I found 4 arrangements that I absolutely love. Love the arrangement of "Believe". That is my new "go to" song. I also love "In Dreams", and "The Notebook Main Title"; I wasn't familiar with those two songs before but fell in love. The songs are fairly easy to play but make you sound like they are harder. And I also love the version of "Over the Rainbow". I wasn't as much of a fan of all the louder movie theme songs. The 4 beautiful ballads keep this book as the most used book on my piano

Great arrangements

These are beautiful arrangements and sound difficult even though they’re not very hard.

Not too easy, not too hard, just right!

I am a self-taught piano player that has been manhandling the ivories for years now. I'm still not good enough to pick up the most complicated pieces and have a hard time with difficult time signatures or keys. This book has some really beautiful arrangements that are largely easy enough to play without sounding like a child's "first piano book." I particularly like the arrangement of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and have enjoyed working my way through the book.If you're not a pro, but want some recognizable pieces that seem artfully filled out, this is the book for you.

What a great collection for a great price

My son has been a reluctant student at his piano lessons lately. His teacher has been incorporating bits from songs he loves each week - slipped in between the regular stuff - and his practice time has tripled. What a great collection for a great price.

Worth the few bucks!

I am nearly thirty-years-old and I wanted to get back into playing. I took lessons for about ten years as a kid, and then switched into percussion, still playing xylophone et cetera through high school. This is a perfect book to pick up and be able to tickle the ivories with, without too much work. I could sight read nearly everything in here. Very happy to purchase.

medium not easy piano solos

I bought this for my daughter when she was about grade 3 and although the book is about that level she didn't really persevere. I think it's because most of the pieces are 3+ pages - which is daunting when you are a younger player. So she has only really started to have a go at playing them properly and enjoying them now that she is grade 4/5. Beware.

Love this collection and find my students love it too

I bought this as a Christmas present for one of my students (I have my own copy as well). Love this collection and find my students love it too! Dan Coates tends to be one of the more difficult arrangers out there - I recommend this product for intermediate level students.
