Fantastic tool!
I purchased this Bosch variable speed DG490CE die grinder specifically to port cylinder heads and it does fantastic in that capacity. I was initially worried it might not be fast enough, spinning 2,500 to 8,000 RPM, but this is plenty for most things. I use long shank carbide burrs a lot and this is the perfect tool for them. I have used air powered die grinders in the past, but this is far better for slow speed work. I currently have a Milwaukee single speed die grinder and it is great for spinning faster things like cut-off wheels or short carbide burrs, just far too fast for some things. Quality wise I would say the Bosch is the equivalent of the Milwaukee - that is to say excellent! The Milwaukee is an older Made in the USA tool, model 4194 and spins to 21,000 RPM. The Bosch is made in Germany and has excellent ergonomics. Speed control in the rear of the unit ensures you aren't inadvertantly bumping it, and I haven't had any issues with the locking power switch. Bosch has a really fantastic product with the DG490CE!

Don't let my candid review fool you, this is a great tool overall
I finally made the transition from air to electric powered die grinders. While air powered ones are nice because if they "bind up" on something they won't usually try to twist out of your hand or tear something up, air powered die grinders require a big compressor for heavy/sustained work. Plus, air grinders are LOUD and typically require lubrication whether through the air supply or by way of manual application to the tool (in the case where you have an oil-less compressor)Pros: Adjustable speed, quieter than its air powered cousins. No lubrication issues to address. Long slender front and overall length provide the ability to reach deep into openings. Plenty of power (torque) for heavy duty use.Cons: kinda large/bulky. Ergonomic transition from air power to electric might put some people "off"...this just has a different "feel". I do not like the power switch. It is a sliding-type switch and does not "lock" into the "on" position very easily. From an ergonomic perspective the switch is a fail IMO. A locking trigger type switch would be better IMO. Also, I do not like the fact that you need (2) different size wrenches (included) to loosen/tighten the collet. Why not incorporate a shaft lock into the tool like many grinders? A person shouldn't need two different sized tools just to change out a bit.

Smooth Tool
I took the chance and ordered this new Bosch DG490CE die grinder over the variable speed Makita GD0800C die grinder. My primary use of the tool is as a sculptor working in hard stone such as granite or amphibolite.I find this die grinder to be:1) Good size (I can operate with one hand at the lower speeds especially in the crook of my arm)2) Not too heavy for extended use3) Surprisingly quiet on the slower speeds4) Super smooth take off5) Easy to use controls even with gloves on6) Offset spindle has great ergonomics7) Super supple reasonably long cord8) Semi-soft very comfortable handle on the shaft9) Ability to run dry diamond abrasive discs within manufacturer's recommended speeds!Speaking of gloves in the summer you will be fine, in the winter you will need good wind proof pair because this tool blows a lot of air over your hands.I am super satisfied with this tool out of the box, while I wish it had the Milwaukee tool guarantee, it feels like a solid well built tool. A case would have been nice. I have not hand compared this tool to the Makita, for me the ability to run at slower speeds sealed the deal. If anyone knows of a good flexible shaft that would be compatible with this beast let us know?Mitch

Gotta have the variable speed!
There are cheaper die grinders around, but this one is SOLID and has variable speed. Of course, you know about Bosch quality, so I won't cover that. The neck is long enough to get into most any tight area. it also provides a place to rest your hand to guide the tip for more accurate grinding.I do a fair amount of welding, and I have needed one of these for YEARS. I kept making do with what I had, but ran into a project that had a weld WAY inside a 35 degree angle. My 4.5" angle grinder couldn't get in there, so I stopped fighting it and just got the die grinder. Now I don't have to fear any future weld grinding operations. Plenty of power. Reasonably quiet.

Great tool, quality workmanship
Great tool, quality workmanship. Switch takes some getting used to. Probably more versatile than faster speed model, just cuts slower with certain attachments in metal. Slower speed allows use on wood and plastic projects (sanding drums, etc)

Heavy duty, plenty of torque
Good for polishing / buffing that has burned up my other die grinders. Works hard, never gets hot. Not very heavy either.

Very powerful
Great die grinder. The only issue is the rubber on the front of the dies grinder slipes and is easily damaged.
