Good but not unique

I enjoyed this book, however it must be said that most of the pictures (80%+) are available from other sources- much as the quote from Prince Albert 'The photographs in this book- unseen until now' would have you believe. There were a few typos- for example saying that Prince Albert accompanied Grace to a late night party in 1962 (when it was surely meant to be Prince Rainier and Albert was only 5). The text is thin and there isn't anything new being said. The pictures are very good however, and if you are a Grace fan like me I would buy this book. In my opinion however, Grace by Howell Conant is a superior book.

A Beautiful & Rare Look at the Life of Grace Kelly

I got "Grace Kelly: A Life in Pictures" as a gift and what a gift it is. The book is a one of a kind. Being a Grace Kelly fan i always wanted a book that not only gave you an insight into her life but gave you pictures of it. This book is everything a Grace fan would want and more it is trully gorgeous. The pictures are stunning and many in the book i had never seen before, there are also great quotes from Grace and those who knew her throughout the book.I highly recomend this book and i feel it is a must for any Grace fan, Ive never seen a book like it on Grace Kelly which makes "Grace Kelly: A Life in Pictures" trully special and a fantastic tribute to the life and work of a special Lady.

Ok but impersonal and random

This book is ok and if you’re a fan of Grace Kelly it’s probably a good addition to a collection. However, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it and there are far better, more personal books out there. For starters, I found the photo selection a bit random. Some photos don’t add much to knowing more about Grace, some are downright unflattering and there are some which are not even good photos (blurry focus or Grace is one in a crowd).Another pet peeve was whilst the book is broadly chronological (and intended to be I presume), some photos are in completely the wrong place - a photo from the 70s put in a section from the 50s, or photos of Grace looking much younger, pre-children put in after photos of her looking much older.I also found a bit odd the last 10 odd pages are dedicated to the ‘death’ of Grace - photos from her funeral. This seemed a bit morbid and unnecessary (particularly one of Caroline, her daughter crying) and there was no text or comments from the family to justify this inclusion.I doubt this book had family approval and it shows. None of the photos are personal family photos (mainly press photos and photo shoots) and hence it seems a bit impersonal. The interspersing of random quotes seems like a nice idea but it doesn’t really line up with the photos. There are much better books on Grace out there (‘The Grace Kelly Years’ is fantastic, personal (unseen) photos and produced by the family; or Howell Conant’s ‘Remembering Grace’ is also beautiful and personal) so I would really only get this if you need to have it for a collection. If you’re going to only get one book, I wouldn’t get this one.

Beautiful book, though should have been edited with more care

This is a beautiful book. It begins with a brief (and fairly shallow) biography. The majority of the book features over 180 photographs from Grace Kelly's life, from infancy through to her funeral, in both colour and black and white, interspersed with quotations by or about Grace. The reproduction and layout of the photographs and the quality of the paper stock are both high and the result is a lovely coffee table book. Most of the photos are stunning and many are ones that I have not seen before.Having said that, my impression was that the book had been compiled hastily and without care. Some quibbles:- Some dates are incorrect. For example there is a photograph ofPrincess Grace meeting John F Kennedy dated May 24, 1964 - which seems unlikely given that it was 6 months after his assassination! Elsewhere there are two photographs of the same event (Grace's arrival in Monaco for her wedding) one of which is dated April 12 1956 and the other April 14 1956.- The photographs are not always displayed in chronological order. For example, midway through a number of photos from the height of her film career in the mid-fifties comes a shot of Her Serene Highness attending a party in 1977. I found this annoying and detrimental to the idea that we were following the span of her life - especially as the majority ARE chronologically arranged.- While most of the photos are gorgeous, some appeared to have been chosen simply because they were previously unseen rather than because of any photographic merit - photographs that were out of focus or badly composed. Others were colour photographs reproduced in black and white, probably to sit better alongside other black and white images, but I would have preferred to see them as originally taken. This is still a lovely book and would be a great gift for a Grace Kelly fan. It is just a shame that more care was not put into its compilation and it is for this reason that I give it only 3 stars.(Incidentally, I recently flipped through the smaller format of this book in Borders. It appears that at least some of the errors have been corrected for the smaller edition).
