“This is the crime that will not be forgiven”
Loki: Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen Omnibus collects Kieron Gillen’s Young Loki epic, which (according to the Amazon Listing) ran through JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #622- 645, EXILED #1, NEW MUTANTS #42-43 (though that ought to read #12-13), THE MIGHTY THOR #18-21, and our hearts.Michael Moorcock, “Elric at the End of Time” –Elric: “I have a dread, doom-laden destiny”.Werner; “I, too, have a dread, doom-laden destiny”.Elric: “Not as doom-laden as mine is”.(…Or words to that effect).More?OK then.In the beginning, Young Loki – who was reincarnated by Thor in Thor: The World Eaters (Thor (Marvel Paperback)) – meets his predecessor (Old Loki), who explains that he was becoming too predictable, so got himself killed in the Siege event, but not before making sure that his spirit would be free from the constraints of an afterlife in Hel. Now he passes his mantle on to Young Loki, who has not got the same character defects that his predecessor grew into. He, too is now free from destiny (says the god of trickery and lies…). However, a new threat is now upon the Nine Worlds, the Serpent is coming, and Young Loki must recruit a few good men to help him stave off fate:Thor: “You’re Loki. No good man’s going to follow you.”Loki: “Well, I’ll have to make do with a few bad ones.”So he recruits the Hel-Wolf and Tyr, the dead god of War, as he weaves a web of cunning and trickery that ensnares Hela and Mephisto into declaring war on each other, then makes a pact with Surtur for the shadow of his sword in exchange for releasing him into Asgard. Not a bad day’s work for a reformed god of trickery. Oh, he steals the Destroyer as well. Then it gets complicated, until eventually Surtur begins his attempt to burn the Nine Realms, apparently thanks to Loki’s many helpful schemes.Loki: “I wanted you to be assured, however, that I almost certainly have nothing to do with it.”All-Mother Freyja: “Hmm.”The Vanir have risen in revolt against the Aesir, Freyja is deposed as queen of Asgard, Volstagg is made king, Thor is betrayed by Loki to Surtur, the gates of Hel are opened, the World Tree is burning, the Manchester Gods are allied with Surtur, and it all seems to be Loki’s work.Anyway, we have big cosmic battles on the one hand involving Thor, and small mysterious character pieces on the other involving Loki, as his life begins to unwind and we find out the fate of Leah, Thorri the Dog, Freyja, Odin, Balder, Thor and Loki himself.“And they all lived happily ever after”“No, they really did”Well… as it turned out, the story continued in Young Avengers by Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie Omnibus (Young Avengers Omnibus) .And then it continued in “Loki, Agent of Asgard”.And then it continued in “The Mighty Thor”.On a more serious note – this was the best Marvel comic of its day, and it is not clear whether its day is yet over. However, this volume is the dawn, and Kieron Gillen is its sun.
