A fun book with some nice history and recipes.

I've used a few of the recipes (sourdough based biscuit and buns mostly) and they work well. The history and text is often engaging.

Outstanding research for old, forgotten recipes. Beautiful historic photos

I must say that I am very surprised and impressed with the quality and depth of real research Mr Walsh put into this book. The historic photos alone are worth buying the book, never mind the recipes! There are stories in this book that I heard versions of from both my Grandfather & my Great Grandmother when I was a kid down on our family ranch in the Chinati Mountains of true West Texas.Just to be clear.... The food in this book is all kinds of good. Page 130 - Sour Dough Bread Pudding with Jack Daniels Whiskey Sauce. Make this. Do not doctor it up. Page 202 - Buttermilk Lemon Pie. I thought this one looked familiar and it is almost identical to my Great Grandmother's handwritten recipe. Hers calls for Mexican vanilla from Chihuahua & a bit more buttermilk (and a handmade crust of course). But if the author found that classic recipe then I'll be cooking most everything else in the book.

Great folk history ! Down-to-earth recipes. A great read !

I've purchased a lot of chuckwagon and cowboy cookbooks, but this one is the most satisfying read. The recipes are down-to-earth even if you don't own a chuckwagon. I enjoy it just for the history.

so much more than a cookbook

I bought a copy of this in Big Bend National Park. It gives great recipes that are especially useful for RV'ers and the history and stories contained inside were my recreational reading. As soon as I got home I ordered another copy on Amazon (which was less expensive that what I paid for it) and mailed it to my brother. My laconic brother called me back to enthusiastically praise this book. He loves to cook with cast iron cookware and found all the recipes adaptable to cook-offs. Again he told me how much he enjoyed just reading the stories connected with the recipes. He keeps it on the coffee table and reads it at leisure. I would reccommend this to anyone with an interest in cooking, camping, and western history. The stories are relevant and do not take over the book because, after all, it is a cookbook but rather extend the recipe. Great Job!

Another good book by Walsh. Fool of typos in kindle edition.

I’ve read most of the books written by Robb Walsh and enjoyed them all. All the recipes I have tried have been delicious. This book was full of typos in the kindle edition. My guess is the program used to translate the book to kindle had issues. Unfortunately some of the recipes are ruined by typos in the ingredient list.

Learn of the pioneer!

Loved photos and written descriptions and articles. That was so unique and interesting. I was hoping for a hearty chili recipe, which I did not get, but glad I got the book anyway!

Cowboy Cooking and Lore in One Book

This book has really grown on me over time. The writing is very good and the stories it tells are excellent. The recipes are good and provide a nice variety of examples of Texas cowboy cuisine and how it's varied over both time and by different region. I've made a number of the recipes already and especially like the various chili recipes and the fideo con carne, which is excellent. As good as the recipes are, the stories are even better. This is one of those books that can be read over and over while waiting for a few minutes, say while cooking. The majority of the stories are short and rich with lore and details that make them very memorable. An enjoyable cookbook or an enjoyable history book? You decide.
