I had a couple of diverse uses for these HeadLOK screw. One use was a trim application and the other a stair repair. These screws worked well for both situations.I have a 10 foot x 5/4 x 6" piece of Bubinga transition board between my tile kitchen floor and my carpeted living room. If you're not familiar with Bubinga, the pieces I have are reclaimed 40+ year old wood that is basically Brazilian Walnut, is hard as rock, easy to machine but tough on machine tools due to it's high silica content.My problem was that over the 10 foot run, I could not pull the Bubinga close to the floor with standard wood screws because it's too thick and the Bubinga was always squeaking and flexing. I tried shims and then floor leveler. Nothing worked. Then I used these HeadLOK lags to pull it down and they worked great.I didn't mind the “steam punk” look of the wide heads on the Bubinga - it looks sort of cool (see photo). I pre-drilled the Bubinga for the HeadLOK lags - I didn't want to split a 40 year old piece of rare hardwood.My other issue was a site built basement staircase. The stair treads were pulling away from the stringers. The HeadLOK lags worked great to pull it all back together.The one thing you need to know is that the "Spider Drive" bits required to drive these lags cannot be replaced with any other bit on the planet. I literally have 200 odd sized drive bits - Torx, Allen, Torx security, 1-3 square drive, Phillips JIS and every other bit you can think of but without the "Spider Drive" drive bit, you're "unscrewed" - you can't drive these bits. That sort of sucks but these bits also drive very securely, better than Torx. I can see what customers complained about the missing drive bit in some reviews because there is no substitute I am aware of - if you know of one, let me know.In the attached photo, you can see the Bubinga trim board with the HeadLOK lags in place, I used a 17mm forstner bit to recess the HeadLOK heads so they are flat to the surface and for the first time in 15+ years, the Bubinga transition board does NOT flex or squeak. A great advancement over lag bolts well worth the extra cost. Used to install a bridge deck (pressure treated), the installation was a breeze using run-of-the-mill regular and impact screw drills (both corded and battery). A number of star drivers were provided with the quantity Of screws I purchased and I anticipated having to switch them out when stripping one due to carelessness. I used only one driver for 225 screws. Although I was prepared for it, the coating on the screws allowed effective install and drew the heads in flush or below the surface, thus no predrilling or countersinking was required. Out of the 225 screws, two were unusable due to extra material (not sure if metal or coating) Impeeded the driver from engaging the head. Time will tell if the screws hold up to the pressure treated lumber better than the hot dipped galvanized bolts used elsewhere on the bridge. I anticipate they will do better but I’m 66 and maybe my grandkids will find out. A contractor friend recommended these over lag bolts and I’m truly grateful for the advice.

These are great screws to use where any seismic force will be generated. They are fast to install and will not split the wood. I have used over 100 of these in different applications on our cabins.

Almost a 5 had a couple that had burrs in the heads making them un-usable bad quality control

Totally happy with these.Pros: the included "spider" bit works great driving these fasteners into redwood, pine and cedar. No experience with hardwoods.Depending on the wood itself (adjacent knots, etc), these will counter-sink themselves without stripping, leaving a flush finish. Much nice than the traditional hex-head timber lox.These have a wider diameter head, so they hold very well.Cons: none.Application -- building a pergola from recycled redwood planks.

If you work on big boy projects, sometimes you need big boy parts, and these screws are the real deal. Bought my initial pack at Lowe's as I was working on my deck.I went back when I ran out, and, of course, found out they were out of stock. When I turned to the clerk behind the Pro Service Desk for help, his reply (and I kid you not) was, "Can't Help Ya Buddy" and sat back down. And, big box stores wonder why people shop online. So, we ordered the screws online. They are made in the USA, and if you are needing to brace some 6 x 6 or other large deck lumber, these are going to save you time and money. I also use them on the ledger boards because they screw in flush to the board, and I can put my joist hangers over the screw if necessary. I like the fact they are thin, so they don't crack the boards, but have the strength of larger screws. And, I buy USA where I can.

Worked perfect! Bought these to hang a header board for interior barn doors. I predrilled into the header board and slightly into the studs. These went in easily using my cordless drill with the supplied driver bit. The header board is extremely sturdy. My header board is 1 inch thick. I definitely recommend these. Great fastener.
