An Excellent Overview!

I got this book as a textbook for a class that I subsequently dropped, but I decided that as long as I had it, I might as well read it. I'm glad I did! This book is a wonderful overview of the greatest Chinese philosophers. Each section begins with a few pages recounting what is known about each philosopher covered and what their central beliefs are. In addition, the actual texts are heavily footnoted with explanations of the language, pertinant cross references, and other little facts that make the reading both more informative and more enjoyable. This is a wonderful book for anyone who's looking to get a decent understanding of the 'big name' Chinese philosophers, and will help anyone looking to show off at parties ;) Even if you're not taking a class, this is a wonderful book.

The book is great for a beginner trying to understand some of the classical writings of Chinese. The reason I put two stars is for this kindle version. There are two kindle versions that they don't make you aware of. One has the page numbers based on the print and the other does not. This is the version that doesn't have it. To make sure you get the version WITH the page numbers hold your mouse arrow over the number of pages link next to the text that says "Length:" A small box should appear with the description. It will specifically say that this version for Kindle comes with page numbers like the print. I had to buy the book again because they failed to post that there is an early Kindle edition (this one) and a later Kindle edition (the one with the page numbers). I accidentally bought this one first. Silly me for not assuming that there would be multiple versions out there.

Sturdy Book

Text is vibrant and easy to read unlike some books that print on that cheapish gray paper. Sturdy book could take the movements of a book bag without any issues. It's like a hybrid of paperback and hardcover haha.

A good addition to the library of students of asian philosophy

A good addition to the library of students of asian philosophy. It fills a gap in that it actually explores the thoughts of the majorChinese philosophers.

Excellent introduction to classical Chinese thought

This book was one of Professor Slingerland's recommended readings for his China 300X MOOC. It presents an excellent overview of classical Chinese thought from the ancient "Hundred Schools of Thought" (500 - 221 BCE). It offers a representative and rich selection of texts from Confucius to Zhuangzi in impeccable modern translations, together with plenty of annotations, introductory explanations and useful additional material. The Chinese terms are romanized in pinyin throughout, bringing the terms in line with modern usage both in China and the West.

Fascinating

I read this book in conjunction with an online course about Chinese Philosophy with EDx. You need both to get a good grounding in the subject

Book condition not as described

The condition of the book was falsely described. When you buy a book with "very good" condition, you do not expect it to have coffee/water damage! That should only be described as being of "acceptable" condition.

Great collection

This is a great collection of recent translations of classics in ancient Chinese philosophy. My only criticism is the lack of more complete versions of the included translations.

Excellent book. I have bought this to accompany Edx

Excellent book. I have bought this to accompany Edx.org course on Early Chinese Philosophy. This was a brilliant course given by a really excellent lecturer, Professor Slingerland at Vancouver, who I understand studied under Dr Ivanhoe, and this book was an excellent companion to the course.
