Legit review of a really good sprinkler pump

UPDATE: 4/20/2025. Going on 6 years and this pump continues to amaze me. Still pushing 70 psi and showing no signs of letting up.UPDATE: 7/16/23: It just keeps going and going! 4 years in and this pump continues to impress. It’s getting 68psi at the end of a 75’ hose, but you wouldn’t know that’s down some from 2020 from seeing how much water it throws from the sprinkler. Still a great purchase!UPDATE 6/8/20: Still a 5 Star rating after 11 months! I’m now using it mostly to draw well water rather than lake water for irrigation.I dropped 22’ of 3/4” pvc into a 24’ deep well, have the pump positioned next to the well, and I’m getting 70 lbs of pressure at the outflow connection, and 75 lbs at the end of 50’ of hose. Not fire hose strength, but plenty to run a variety of sprinklers AND keep my irrigation water bill at $0! Still very happy after almost a year.Original review:Got the Wayne PLS100 to pump lake water to irrigate our Bermuda and zoysia grasses. Researched way too much, and thankfully decided on the Wayne over several cheaper off-brand models. Not saying the cheaper ones are bad, but the Wayne is freakin awesome!Used a 1” brass foot valve (TC2503LF) on the intake hose (6’ length of 1” reinforced clear hose from Home Depot) and I was off to the races. Primed the pump per the manual, plugged it in, flipped the switch and after about 25 seconds the oscillating sprinkler at the end of the hose was throwing a 50’ wide shower of lake water 75’ away, 10’ above the intake. And the spray spread was almost what the house bib produced.I then turned it off, added another 75’ hose, and ran it to the front yard. Turned it back on and almost immediately it was throwing about the same amount of spray as the back yard, but at 22’ above and 150’ from the intake. And did I mention it’s relatively quiet? Outside it is. Now if it was located close to a living area, you’d be wise to fashion an insulated, ventilated box for it.Am I impressed? Yup.So I decided to push my luck, and I put a splitter at the 75’ point and added a 25’ hose to each with the same oscillating sprinklers at each end. At that point, you could see some degradation of water force, but still adequate for watering. To my eye, there was about 20% less pressure.I moved the splitter, hoses and sprinklers to the front yard (150’ from pump to splitter with a 22’ rise above the lake). Again, you could see less spray from the sprinklers. With both sprinklers in-line, the total coverage was approx 50’x25’. While not as good as when they were on a single 75’ hose, the 1200 sq ft coverage is adequate.Update: I swapped out the 1” intake hose for a 30’, 3/4” hose to get the pump closer to the power source. There’s no discernible loss of water pressure at the 150’ point, and I know this because I borrowed a psi gauge to check. It’s 78 psi straight from the pump’s outlet, 76 psi at the 75’ point, and 63 psi at 150’ (22’ above intake). All in all, the Wayne PLS100 is a VERY impressive irrigation pump that (assuming I get years of use) ought to pay for itself by significantly lowering my water bills during the summer watering months in SC! Well worth the money.

Lasted 9 years with heavy use and abuse - buying my 2nd one June 2024

I bought this pump in August of 2015 when we bought a property with a bold creek. The property had been abandoned and was in desperate need of serious watering for the new lawn and landscaping we were installing. We were on county water and a few calculations on the cost of the pump plus electricity versus the cost of thousands of gallons of county water showed the pump would pay for itself in a year... sold. Best decision ever. The creek had roughly 8ft banks and we kept the pump at the top of the bank with a typical brass suction foot/check valve to keep the pump primed between uses. We used it there for heavy watering with a tripod sprinkler and medium grade 5/8" garden hoses for countless hours with no issues. We bought a new house on a lake in 2019 and brought this pump with us. Same setup of a suction foot valve in the lake and two separate garden hoses on a wye valve at the pump discharge. One hose goes to our raised beds, and the other is connected to a tripod sprinkler we move around the yard when extra watering is needed. It finally smoked a week ago after countless hours of use, and numerous times finding it running dry. I'm buying my 2nd one after posting this review. Excellent pump. (We will eventually install a dedicated irrigation system but this beast has been everything we could ask for in the meantime)

Very good so far

This pump has lived up to expectations and seems to be a great value. I bought it because I didn't need a bigger 1 1/2 horsepower sprinkler pump (and certainly didn't want to pay for one from a home improvement warehouse ($300+ dollars!), but I didn't want a 1/2 horsepower pump, either. I feel like I got a powerful, quality, sprinkler pump product for the price of a 1/2 horsepower transfer pump. I'm using this pump to pull water out of four 55 gallon rain barrels and pump it uphill (vertical distance 8-10', horizontal distance 110'). It's got more than enough pressure for one sprinkler uphill and a 2nd one in another area. I'm not sure how many sprinklers I could run on this, but it's certainly more than 2.I connected the pump to the rain barrels via 1" Sched. 40 PVC pipe, each pipe in each barrel with a foot valve so that water stays in the pipe and the motor stays primed. The output connects via 1" Sched. 40 PVC Pipe to two 3/4" hose bibs. The pump puts out as much water as the hose bibs will let it pump and provides more than enough water pressure. As for some of the other comments on this product:- This pump absolutely holds prime if you go by the instructions in the manual and use a foot valve. The best foot valve for the money seems to be from Merrill Mfg. and is available here on Amazon.com. If you're using this product with hoses and no foot valves, you *must* assume you need to prime it every time. No pump defies gravity. NEVER RUN THE PUMP WHEN IT IS DRY - when in doubt -- prime it.- This pump is also not difficult to prime if you read the instructions. Have a funnel handy. I used a funnel and a garden watering can and had no trouble priming the pump and replacing the priming port bolt. This pump is probably not good if you are using a garden hose in and a garden hose out. Since it does have good suction it is best to use rigid pipe or a reinforced flexibile hose of some type for the input. The description "portable" is misleading. Yes, it's easy to transport, but the way it's designed This pump is probably better for stationary applications. In conclusion, this pump is proving perfect for a piped applicaiton like mine. It's a great value (1/3 less money than a bigger 1.5HP sprinkler pump from a big box store). It seems like it's going to provide at least a couple of years of good service.
