Non-VOC Powder Paint, 1 Pint, Providence

First off, I’ve never used milk paint before and this review addresses both the quality of this particular milk paint and just a few heads up notes for other people who have never used it before. First, about this particular paint. It’s water soluble, easy to clean, goes on well and coverage seems to be about what is advertised. I used slightly more water 1.15:1 to paint measured by grams on a kitchen scale to get a replicable consistency each time. The color was true to the advertised, and matched the swatch. Zero VOC, which I loved for baby items. Overall worked very well, with good value as compared to other milk paint brands. I was very happy with the results.Now some things I learned for my first time using milk paint. First off, it’s not like other water-based pre-mixed paints. The paint is essentially a particle suspension in water so it’s not as “viscous” as say store bought interior paint and variations to your mixture ratio will largely affect how much surface area you can cover and how quickly it dries. It is not sprayable via an airless sprayer (like the graco cup gun) because of its clumpiness and will jam the sprayer (trust me I tried). Furthermore, milk paint is transparent after the first coat (think a tint of color only) which is nice if you are trying to still see wood grain below but really difficult if you are trying to cover a dark color with a light color. However, with each subsequent coat of paint it gets more opaque. Semi-opaque after 2-3 coats and then fully opaque after about 3-4 coats. (I had a walnut stain under a white, which took 4 coats to be totally opaque white). Lastly, it does need to still be coated with a finishing layer of a wax or oil (I used “real milk paint” brand wax). It will bubble and peel if water drops on it without a top coat, because it is water soluble. Lastly, it does have a nice velvet feel to it if you sand it before top coating it.(highly recommended)

Great protection for citrus tree bark exposed to the harsh Arizona sun. Easy to mix and apply. Half a bag was enough for 3 trees. Non toxic milk paint recommended. Dries quick, sticks to everything!

The same old milk paint I've used for years. My favorite.

I was looking for a no VOC, natural white paint to use in my toddlers room for some unfinished pine furniture (bed frame and small dresser) and milk paint kept coming up in my searches. I have no experience painting, but this stuff is pretty forgiving! Little to no odor, and pretty easy to mix. I even contacted the company for painting tips and to figure out how much I needed, and they were very helpful. "Wash" like finish took 3 coats, but really looked more opaque white after about 5-6 coats. I ended up buying a 2nd quart size mix, but still have about 1/2 left. Apparently it keeps well in its powder form so I could use for a future project.

Beyond my expectation. It's environmental friendly, easy to use and no smell. All you need is some water and a tub to hold the paint. If the paint were to stain on your skins, you just need to wash it with water. I thought the color will start to fade after a short time, since this product is made from natural materials, no special chemical or weather resistant to protect the paint. To my surprise, after a few rain and winter storms recently, the color still look as new as before. Double thumbs up to this product!

Color is pretty, but it is difficult to fully mix and a lot of it remains clumpy. I used warm water and mixed for bit, still had clumps, so then I shook it in a jar. No matter how long I mixed it it was still clumpy in parts. I followed the directions on the bag. Also, if you have adhesion problems note that to use milk paint you will have to sand down a surface or have it previously painted with some other mineral paint for it to stick good. If you just paint on a glossy surface or sealed surface it will not stick, saw the reviews mention that it doesn’t stick, it does if used properly.I used another milk paint on top of this milk paint; the homestead milk paint was way smoother and not clumpy when mixed up.

This stuff is the best. I mix in small batches only what I need , I love not having to have cans of paint stored everywhere(full of chemicals) this is a matte finish. I use the old brown paper bag trick ,if I want a harder finish I buff it with brown paper bags. If I want the matte finish I just leave it alone. My husband and I can't have chemicals smells around us and this has a very light odor. I painted an antique cupboard (someone started to paint strip it years ago) I could see original green paint and I wanted to return it as much as I could to it's original finish. The green is a bit darker than army green
