High Quality Kids Bike

Initially I was worried because of the 1st reviewer who left a 1-star review, but my 10 year old daughter loves her new bike! The quality of the bike is much better than what we were typically getting from Walmart or Toy's R Us. The shifter is precise, the brakes are easy to adjust/fine-tune, the bike is fairly light, and the purple pain is actually really nice. I am glad that the tires are smooth...no need for knobby tires in a suburban neighborhood. As you can see in the pictures, we added a water bottle cage, a cheap basket, and her bell. I also added a stem extender to raise the handlebar a couple inches. Unfortunately, I could only find a black extender instead of a chrome one, but it was a simple add that my daughter requested. I won't knock off a star because of my daughter's preferences to sit a little more upright. The stem is 1 1/8th inches in diameter for anyone who also wants to extend it.The only problem I encountered was the rear tire inner-tube had a hole in it when it arrived. I'm not sure if it happened because of the packing/shipping or because of manufacturer defect, but my daughter could not ride her brand new birthday present until. It was a super easy fix tho.Overall, more than impressed with the bike...it will definitely last longer than the others we have bought our kids in the past. I'm glad that we went with the 24" since it gives her plenty of room to grow with it while she gets used to shifting and braking with the hand brakes.

8yr Old Daughter Loves It

Great bike. I covered all the options. Buy from a local bike shop where they have Trek or Specialized, high quality stuff, and pay close to $400 or more. Go cheap and buy a 24" from Target or Walmart for say $100-$150. Go to Dick's for their line of bikes for about $200-$225. Buy used for one of the aforementioned, though given the timing of my purchase (Oct) there wasn't much available locally. So then I found these Raleigh bikes after seeing one used at a local bike shop selling for $200 with 3+ years on it. This was in between the options, a bit cheaper than the high end assuming you assemble yourself, but top notch quality on par with those. Certainly way better than all of the cheaper options, I compared specs side by side. This bike had a few things going for it that I liked:Skinnier wheels since my daughter will ride mainly on streets / sidewalks, much lighter than all the cheaper ones, preferred a 7-speed to say a cheap 21-speed from Target where more could go wrong.I pulled the trigger on it and assembled myself. It took some time but overall not too difficult. Crossbar (handle bar) needs to be lined up with your eye, brake handles set to a 45 degree angle. Things like that take extra time to make sure you have it right. The brakes were the trickiest part but I "think" I figured that out.The bike rides great, I know I have a great quality bike that will be handed down to a younger kid, then can probably sell it for $100+ in 5 years' time. No regrets, if you're in a similar position wanting to go higher end but save a bit of money you won't go wrong with this bike.

great deal on a great kids bike if you are willing and able to assemble

I was looking for something better than a Toys R Us / Walmart bicycle for my 9 year old daughter. Raleigh is a legit brand. I saw this bike in a local, reputable bike shop for $320 and later noticed it on Amazon for nearly $100 less. The price here as of writing this review isn't quite as low but it's still a good deal. The only downside would be the need to assemble it myself. Decided to go ahead and get it here since I'm good with mechanical things and have a lot of tools. (Although am not a "bike guy" specifically.) Assembly and simple tuning of the bike was not too bad but it did take me a solid 3-4 hours to unpack everything, watch various youtube videos, and carefully assemble. Tuning the brakes and derailleur took the longest amount of time. So in the end I got a great deal and am very happy with the bike but I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't comfortable with tools and mechanical things. I made sure to buy a tube of grease from a bike shop in advance of assembling, mainly for the seat post. One nice thing about this bike is how incredibly light it is. It is noticeably lighter than the 20" Toys R Us bike this one replaced.I added a kickstand, the Greenfield KS3B (285mm): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008DT3MG4/Screwed right on but I had to hacksaw it shorter and grind the end to not have sharp edges. A bit of a pain but I'd rather have a fixed-length kickstand than adjustable length since it's more sturdy.

Excellent bike

My 9 year old daughter is on the smaller side, 53". I debated whether to get her a 20" or a 24". After speaking to a few bike shops I've come to find out that 24" bikes use the same size frame as a 20". Only the wheel diameter is bigger. This Raleigh is a REAL bike. Up until now my daughter only had Walmart bikes as I knew she'd grow out of them fast. I knew the next bike would have last and it had to be quality. I did not want to get her a mountain bike as we would do the majority of our riding on pavement and possibly packed trails. This bike fits the bill as it is a hybrid.Package arrived with a puncture on box but the bike itself was not damaged. Everything was in mint condition. Also the bike is 90% assembled. All I had to do was assemble wheels, pedals, handle bar and attach brake cables. The gears were already perfectly tuned! It took me only 30 minutes. After I was done, I realized that Raleigh also provided all the tools you would need inside the box! I only wish the wheels had quick release skewers in the event we run a flat during a ride.My daughter loves the bike and gets alot of compliments on it. It's her first geared bicycle and she immediately can tell how easier and helpful it was to ride. She now catches up to me on our long rides.
