I've had DT Swiss Big Ride on both winter and summer wheelsets now for several years, and I can tell you this upgrade alone makes hill climbing, logs, rock sections, so much more fun with the instant grab going from 18 teeth to 54! I'm not a bike mechanic, but if you are comfortable taking off your cassette, then this is a great DIY upgrade and goes really quick. That zippy sound it provides is kinda fun too.

This is an expensive upgrade to the 18t ratchet that comes standard with most DTSwiss OEM wheels. The 18t is probably fine for road applications, but for gravel and MTB, the 54t is much better. The ratchets are genuine DTSwiss, and came with the special red grease and the springs needed to upgrade from the 18t. It’s easy to pry the old hub off (in my case, a Shimano 11 speed hub) to get to the internals to swap out. You only need a little grease on the ratchets and springs, it doesn’t need to be coated excessively. Once installed, the 54t sounds like music to your ears. It offers super quiet, super quick engagement that is perfect for gravel bikes. This is my 3rd set of DTSwiss wheels to upgrade to 54t, and it is one that works and lasts. I have almost 7k miles on my hardtail, and outside of yearly maintenance to re-grease the ratchets, I’ve never had a problem. The only reason for 4 stars is the price.

Great upgrade from a stock 18t ratchet. Just took the bike out for a spin and it made a world of difference.Can I suddenly ride super techy rock gardens? Probably not. But they sure help me from getting frustrated in the rock gardens I CAN ride!Sound cooler, too. But not as cool as having a swarm of bees following you.
