Love this book as a reference and for the history
It is a great book if you need to look up the date of the postcard by looking at the back. I love the photos in the book, the history of photography. There is so much packed into this book. It is well worth the money and it makes a great coffee table book.

The best "Real Photo" postcard book.
The smart thing I did was to buy this book first. The dumb thing was to waste money on 3 others. Not only does the author pass along knowledge, he shows his love of the subject.

Encyclopedic but with an artist eye
What makes this book exceptional is that it provides both a good history, and fundamentals, while including around 300 superb examples of real photo cards. For the text there is a quick history of postcards and photography. For those trying to date cards, there are good hints, and the inclusion of appendix on dating based on stamps and the backs is a big help. By looking at the background of a few photographers, the reader is help to understand the life of a professional photographer of the time. This is supplemented by a discussion on how the author researched the life of photographer William Mandeville, and the appendix includes a brief paragraph on around 200 photographers. The longest chapter is on categories, with over 100 examples, and some favorites included "After shooting the oil tank", ""Calvin Coolidge plowing", and an early Coca-cola delivery truck.

Why I have purchased this book TWICE
Real Photo Postcards are the under-appreciated stepchild of early Photography. Just as scarce and just as interesting as ANY early vernacular photographic technique, it is still possible to assemble a good collection at an affordable price. This book taught me everything I needed to know the first time I put together a nice RPPC collection...and it is doing the same as I do it again. At this point, by far the best book on the subject!Jim Linderman "Dull Tool Dim Bulb" Take Me to the Water: Immersion Baptism in Vintage Music and Photography 1890-1950

Bogdan & Weseloh's book taught me a lot about RPPCs. It is readable, engaging, and well illustrated. I recommend this book for both longtime and new collectors of real photo postcards.

Very good, but needed a bit more analysis
This is a comprehensive book about a fascinating subject. It perhaps lacks some depth of analysis, and it doesn't say much about the relationship between studio photography and amateur photography, but it is generally a good read with a wide remit.
