Write to Speak: How to go from blank page to speaking on stage

I received an advanced copy of Mike Acker's book. This book is a quick guide to help you craft the speech you are wondering how to write. This book gives you simple, repeatable structure for your speeches. Mike Acker suggests, "Speeches should answer four main questions. Why? Why am I giving this speech? Who? Who is the audience? For this question generalize. What? What do you want to say about your subject? The fourth question is Who? Get deeper with who the audience is." The author suggests brainstorming with a mind map. Mike Acker states, " Then organize your points into three large systems: introduction, body, and conclusion. Then further break down the body of the speech into 'points'." He says, "For your speeches, you can choose three points which serve as the buckets for all the other material. If three is not possible, emphasize three points out of the many." Another piece of advice from Mike Acker is, " Cut out content from the page, not at the stage." I like the quote Mike Acker includes. "What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from. " - T.S. Eliot

Really enjoyed this book. I am no stranger to this author as he has solid books. I will reference «Write to Speak» from time to time again with my speaking opportunities at work. I really enjoyed the no-nonsense approach with tips on the topic of «Landing» really stuck out in my mind. I recommend the ebook as there are links to use if need be. Folks we all need to speak publicly; add this one to your library.

There is something to be said for the way that the material is presented. Without knowing where you want to go, you have no real way to determine how to start, or how to fill the body of your speech. In a way, his analogy is like saying you are going on a road trip. Instead of getting in the car and driving with no idea of where you are headed, you plan where you are going and figure out the route after the destination. My biggest issue with the book was actually in the binding itself. Many of the pages were not well bound and fell out while reading.

Write to Speak was an extremely useful book about public speaking that I found just in the nick of time before doing a presentation. It walks you through some of the basics and teaches you how to make an excellent presentation. It's still not easy and public speaking for me like most people is one of the most difficult things we do but with this book it was a bit easier.

I wasn’t sure what to think when I started Write To Speak, Mike Acker’s book on speech writing and public speak. I just knew that in my own life, I had to write a speech at a public event. Acker provides easy-to-follow steps, explains them in an amusing and direct way, and even talks on how to add flourishes to make your talk/toast/speech memorable.This book is short, which is a good thing because it helps keep all the lessons firmly in mind. After reading this book I sat down with a yellow pad, went back through the book chapter by chapter, and created the 11-minute speech I needed. I don’t know if it would have won any awards, but it absolutely got me through a moment of great social anxiety. 5 Stars.

The author starts with some very good questions to start us on our way. Namely, why, what and who? These are important questions that we can construct our speech around.I was familiar with the idea of mind mapping, but the author gives us solid ideas on how to do this to get the ball rolling. Then we go on to points in the speech, 3 points being the goal (this is explained).Finally, he talks about how to “land” a speech for the ultimate impact, and he gives us different types to try. The notes he gives us on the structure of speeches are very helpful for would-be speech writers. Plus there is a whole section on hooks! Recommended!

Write to Speak was incredibly helpful to me as I was preparing a presentation I gave earlier this month. It’s super short—straight and to the point. The author walks you through how to prepare your speech or presentation from start to finish.I used this method as I was working on my presentation and I will refer back to this book any time I ned to prepare a presentation in the future.If you do any type of speaking, this book is a handy resource!

This is a very informative and helpful guide for preparing speeches. The process can be repeated for any topic. The author shows many examples from his own speeches and notes, even unedited. It's a great book to help anyone prepare to speak.

It is just a guide on how to organize your speech. It is easy to read I think is just ok

The framework and guidelines make perfect sense. I can see myself use them and refer to them again and again at work.

I enjoyed Mike's first book and so was keen to read this one. It's an easy read and full of tips and methods to put together a great speech, whatever the occasion. I like that it gets straight to the point, no fluff or ego stuff to wade through before you get to the nitty-gritty, which makes it a great resource to have by when that request to stand up and speak in public comes.
