Vox in Tenebris: A Latin Novella (Latin Edition)

This is an excellent beginners book for several reasons. One is that it is not a children's story. It is an adaptation from older legends which is fun. Second, the writing is clear and you can derive meanings from the context of the situation. Also good. Third, there are periodic margin notes which help move the translation along. Fourth, there is an EXTENSIVE dictionary at the end of the book which translates everything. It is written for 3rd and 4th term students so you may want to do a primer first. BUT, overall a fun story and a good Latin training tool. Highly recommend

I'm about halfway through "Lingua Latina per se illustrata" & I thought I'd try reading a few "easy latin" stories to branch out a bit & get more practice. I was very pleased with this novella. It's difficulty level is rated as intermediate, but other than needing to look up a few words, I had no trouble understanding it.There's a thorough vocabulary at the end & some words/phrases are defined in the margins.The illustrations are clearly drawn by a latin teacher & not an artist though. I could take them or leave them. They feel a bit like they're padding out the page count a bit. There's only 94 pages not counting the glossary, and every page has at least one picture. This could have fit into about 50 pages without the pictures (which again, don't really add anything)The story is pretty good, an adaptation of a story from Apuleius's Golden Ass. I was unfamiliar with that particular story from it, so it was pretty engaging. I'd recommend it to anyone studying latin

本書は現代の著述家であり教育者である著者がラテン語の初学者向けに著した書物である。現代人によるラテン語のテクストをバチカンのホームページでしか見たことのない私にとって、本書とこのシリーズの存在はあらゆる物が改悪されて行く社会における大いなる光明に思えた。世の中には多様性のお題目のもと日々排泄され続けている訳のわからない文物で溢れているが、私はかつて存在していた偉大な文化を再び現代人の選択の棚に提供するのも、立派な多様性の一形態だと信じている。その意味で本書は真実に多様性ある社会を体現するひとつのムーブメントであり、より広い層の人々に、メディアに取り上げてもらいたいと思うのである。
