Came with features I didn’t even know about!
Well we had the cheap plastic stick on lock for 2 years until I broke it last week. Getting that thing off was brutal and time consuming. The entire thing is made of about 5 cents in plastic. Hated it and glad it broke so I could research something more quality and substantial. So I got a Toughbolt. Better quality but zero chance of working on most sliding doors due to the NASA level tolerance and bad design. Returned.Next up the Patio Door Guardian. What an improvement, mostly metal and with great feature not possible on the completely manual plastic and TOUGHBOLT locks. The install was relatively easy, and very secure with 4 or 6 screws. What I love about this lock is the 2 options for usage: you can leave the bolt in locked position or hold it in an open position. In the locked position it was automatically in first the open airflow hole for about 3-4” of ventilation or close it further for fully closed. Neither require you to touch the lock. In the fully open position you can use the door without worry of touching the lock. For that reason and build quality, this is the lock to get! My older children can reach it but then little can’t. Perfect.

Great for child safety
There's nothing like the panicked feeling of getting up in the morning, and discovering one of your young children has learned how to open the patio door, and has wandered outside. Our children were able to defeat the lock on our patio door, so we needed a solution to keep the door shut. This lock definitely fit the bill. Installation wasn't bad, and it's quite sturdy, and quite easy to use. It _is_ possible to lock yourself out, on purpose or otherwise. You can pull the shaft down and turn it, to disable the lock, or you can just pull it down and open the door. In the latter case, when you close the door, it automatically locks. On our door, we were unable to use the plastic guide (which is optional) because there wasn't quite enough clearance for the door to slide under it.All in all, a very nice product, which has given us great peace of mind.Note: previously the description mentioned no drilling necessary. Arguably true, but misleading. It's possible to install it by only using screws, but it's still putting holes in the door.

This is just what i was looking for. We have been using the Door Guardian locks for all our regular swing open doors for years now and HIGHLY recommend them! They are not only excellent child proof locks they are an excellent security lock as well. I literally watched our front lock and door knob turn (witnessed an attempted unauthorized entry right there from my couch, very scary) if not for the Door Guardian, the cops likely would have been called for another reason than attempted break in. We moved into a new house with a slider door and needless to say I was very pleased to find they make the slider lock too. It was easy to install, and the enclosed template is very helpful when installing. Highly highly recommend these locks. I have had so many friends ask me where I got my door locks, it got to the point I just keep the link bookmarked in my phone for easier sharing! lol!

Works well; not easy to install
This device can work well, but installing it was problematic until I modified the approach from that called for in the instructions. For one thing, it includes an installation template to be cut from the included instruction sheet. Those instructions are on very thin paper that is multiply folded, all of which makes for a floppy and inaccurate template. I recommend tracing it onto something firmer.More importantly, two pieces are called for to be installed: the piston onto the sliding door, which I'll call the "door mount," and a receiver strip to be fit within the door's track. The door mount installs fairly easily. On the other hand, I found exactly placing and installing the receiver to be very difficult. In the end, I installed two of these door guardians, abandoning the use of the receiver strips entirely, doing the following instead:1) Within the door mount, the piston can be seated in different positions. I placed it at its most extended position.2) With the piston retracted, I secured the door mount to the door using only the adjustable screw slotsso the top of the retracted piston was ±3/32" (a bit less than 1/8") below the door track. Once I was satisfied that the door would then operate fully without interference, I added the two screws in the door mount's fixed-position holes.3) With the door fully closed, I released the piston so it pressed up against the door track, and I marked that position with a pencil.4) With the door opened 3", I repeated that, again marking where the piston met the door track.5) I then removed the door mount entirely, and using the approximate centers of those two marked points of piston contact, I used a 5/8" bit (larger than what's called for in the instructions) to drill holes through the door track at those two points to a depth of 1/2"+.6) I re-mounted the door mount. The guardian now works perfectly using the holes in the door track to either prevent the door from being opened or to hold it open at 3".

I love it and my toddler hates it
This works perfect to keep my toddler from opening the door and getting out. In the cracked open setting he can get an arm and leg out but that is it. He gives up after a minute and I have fresh air! The install was easy but my door didn’t allow me to use all the screws and it still is secured well. My door didn’t work with the pop out self stick style locks because they need a big gap between the glass doors and this doesn’t. It blends in and looks like it belongs there and not like a temporary baby proof item just tacked on. It was well worth drilling holes in the door.

Good replacement for a broken part
We like leaving a small gap open in our patio door for a bit of fresh air. So when our other part broke, we bought this one as a replacement. Sturdy, does the job and good price for the part.
