Old fashioned brown bread

This is great to have on hand. We love it with cream cheese

If you like bran muffins, you will love this!

Negative reviews I have read seem to be linked to inappropriate expectations of the product. The recipe is an old one. A few hundred years ago, there was no refined white sugar -- only various grades of brown sugar. Sugar was costly but useful as a preservative. Vinegar, sugar, and salt were frequently employed to increase the shelf life of food. Canning, pickling, and drying were commonplace.Wheat grew poorly in the colonies. Rye was grown along side to hedge bets on a successful harvest. The native corn grew quite well, and so bread products were often a mix of all three grains. After the harvest, there were many months without fresh food. With sugar being costly, muffins were a sweet treat, and with the mix of the three unrefined grains, Boston brown Bread was similar to a rustic version of cornbread or bran muffins. This bread was useful when fresh bread could not be had or readily baked during the bitter winter months. It is substantial, dense, and wonderful, like canned bran muffins. My cans arrived un-dented and in perfect condition. The expiry was three years hence. As per the instructions on the can, simply open both ends and push the bread out from one side. What slides out is like a large cylindrical bran muffin. It can then be easily sliced into eight equal portions with a clean knife. Imagine the bottom part of a bran muffin without the muffin top.I was surprised to find some people could not tolerate the flavor, as I found it innocuous. It seemed to me as easy to eat as oatmeal, bagels, or bran muffins. What CAN these folks eat?The flavor and density is similar to that of a bran muffin: mild molasses sweetness, good wheat flavor, dense and chewy. the bread toasts easily. If you enjoy toast, you'll find this is... similar to a toasted bran muffin

Great buy & good bread

I haven't seen this in grocery stores in my area in years, so I was surprised to find it here. I remember this B&M Brown Bread from when I was a kid. My mom would heat it up in the oven and we would have it at dinner every once in a while. I'm originally from NJ and I think this bread was a North East thing, as I would see it in the stores back there. I enlisted in the military and am now in AZ and I've only seen this B&M product once in a store out here many years ago.For a canned bread, it is real good, has a hearty wheat flavor and has a little bit of sweetness to it. It is good right out of the can, heated up in an oven or microwave, or toasted. Cut them in about 1/2" slices and eat it plain or put your favorite topping on it.It also makes a great storage, back packing, camping or survival food. Packing a couple of can on a hike or camping trip isn't bad. They are light to me even thought the can says it is 1 pound. It's low in fat, made of whole wheat and has never slowed me down on a hike. Just make sure you have a can opener with you. I always have one of those military P-38 can openers on me that I use to get in the old C-Rations before they went to the MRE's. But you can get the P-38 and it's slightly larger version the P-51 here on Amazon and they are a good thing to have around for that just in case emergency.

More like muffin in a can, less like bread, but still really good. Pantry/prepper staple!

I like it and would buy it again. Bigger than I thought! Has a bran muffin taste. Rich and dense, and ever so slightly sweet. Definitely taste the molasses, which I like. Overall I just wasnt sure what to expect as I hadn't had this before, but I like it. I bought on a whim. I was hungry, haha.Makes nice addition to preps but just a good pantry staple now too. Eat as snack, eat with a bowl of something hot. Definitely more muffin like than bread like but all good. Toss one in emergency supplies in car, put one in hiking pack, keep one at work. Of course, need a can opener. The portability and long long shelf life is greatly appealing.Have to open can from both ends, and use a spoon to push out--with some force. Came out all in one piece.

I've loved this since I was a little kid.

Back in the 1960's. Mom used to heat this up in the oven, slice it, then add cream cheese. These days, I heat up only a few slices at a time in the nuker for about 15 - 20 seconds. Now I add other toppings like Cottage cheese, youghurt, honey, jam, peanut butter, (or a combo), etc.YUM YUM !!

Really fresh.

Fresh, moist and really good. I ordered a case and was afraid I'd get dated or almost dated cans but they were brand new.

Perfect provision pertinent to prepared persons particular to pantry potpourri

We’ve enjoyed this bread as a means for creating quick and filling meals when we are short on time or just want a lighter supper. While good with a fat such as cream cheese or butter, another way we’ve always enjoyed enjoy using this is toasted, buttered, and with baked beans on top. Apparently that’s a New England tradition. We like that it turns baked beans into a meal unto themselves this way. With canned butter that is a meal that is easy to make from all canned foods and provides nutrient dense meals in a shelf-stable way. As others have pointed out, having these kinds of carbs and quick energy in a can is a bonus for fold storage. For those looking to build variety into a pantry, this is a diverse tool that can supplement other meals created from long-term food storage. It’s also quite affordable. Is it everyone’s tastiest food? No. But it’s quite palatable for bread that comes from a can and would likely be a morale booster in times when emergency food could get quite redundant.
