The New Social Story Book: 10th Anniversary Edition

Very good. Some stories are a little wordy.
Very good book for work with children with a variety of social needs. My only criticism, is that some of the stories are kind of wordy, while also being a be short. However it says you can omit or add words in order to make it more appropriate. I would have liked to have more stories about stress or anxiety. Moreover, I really like the stories that are linked to little activities and that talk about change and Fort Able. They are cute little stories for kids.

wonderful social stories
use these for helping my child develop his social abilities. Great for use when trying to help build onto what your child may kind of grasp, helps supplement and give better reasoning that they will understand in terms and situations that they are familiar with. A must have for those with kids on the spectrum.

It’s not what I thought.
It is a teacher resource book of suggestions. I wanted a book of PRE written Social Stories. I used to have a great hard backed one that was spiral bound. So great. I thought this was by the same author…

Fantastic resource!
These social stories explain so many situations that kids find challenging. My 6 year old with Aspergers needs to be explicitly told the reasons why things are as they are, why we need to do what we need to do, and what is his "job" or our expectation of him. The stories greatly reduce his rigidity and anxiety for new situations & places - he knows what to expect, and he knows what is expected of him. He will often resist "social story time", but as soon as I start reading a story that is relevant to a recent or upcoming experience, he is fully engaged, asks great questions, and wants to read more stories. It works great for my son. I also have Jed Baker's book referenced in the other reviews, which is also a great resource. The books address very different types of situations in different ways. Jed's book addresses how to handle everyday, common social situations, and has been very helpful for us as well. The main difference is Carol Grey's stories address a lot of novel situations as well as common situations, typically explaining "why" with intentionally little instruction, while Jed's book is purely instructional.

An excellent social skills resource
One of my purchases this spring was The New Social Story Book because I wanted some 'home' curriculum of social stories. After reading reviews I settled on this book and I'm quite satisfied. I think a lot of the social story books that I had seen in the past were targeting pre-school to 1st grade kids as well as much lower functioning kids. Carol Gray's book is most definitely targeting late elementary to middle school higher functioning kids. The language is mature and straight forward, but still appealing to a child. We've been using the book for four months now and I'm very pleased. My son is fine with reading the stories together and discussing them and he's liked several of the 'activities'. We started with the intro, but then skipped around to the areas that he was having the most immediate need. The book tackles many critical areas for kids on the spectrum such as change, mistakes, bullying, school, as well as basic social skills areas such as greetings and parties. There's also a large section dealing with feelings, emotions, and feeling comfortable. I really like her 'Fort Able' concept. After hitting some 'key stories' for him, I went back to the beginning and have been doing most of the pertinent stories in order (The Fort Able section in full) and occasionally skipping some stories that aren't too applicable or he's pretty much beyond. The front section of the book contains a lot of great information for the parent or therapist who wants to learn about social story construction and usage. There's a CD that includes pdf and word copies of the book to print out if desired for group activity or printing some of the activity sheets to fill out. This book is an excellent resource. My plan is to continue using the book for the remainder of the summer and hit the 'school' section in full the week before school starts back up. And absolutely, this book is a great resource for neurotypical children as well! Everyone can benefit from thinking about and discussing social stories, even me:)

Louella Special Educator
Thank you Mz Carol Gray for a masterpiece! I just loved reading and learning how to create Social Stories for those children wanting reasons and not commands. I love the democratic approach to parenting, and teaching our children to navigate through their world without feeling foolish. Social Stories have opened up a world of independence to many children as parents can formulate their own stories to meet the individual needs of the child. I found the many examples in the book most useful as a template to write more fluently and effectively. Loved the CD attached to further help you produce your own work which is tailored to the individual child/teen. So grateful to the Author for her eye for detail when it comes to Social Stories. A must for every educator and that includes parents who become their child's first and last educator.

Great book!
This book is great! So some of the criterion for writing a Social Story is a little hokey - the author tries to stick to a number theme which is a little odd - but all in all a great resource. Social Stories have helped my 5 year old on the spectrum immensely.

and the refore this is basically useless as a therapy tool
I ordered this book after reading the reviews that other parents and therapists wrote. I bought the kindle version, as I do not live in the United States, however, I cannot download any PDF or WORD version. I could not contact anyone to help me figure this out, and therefore this is basically useless as a therapy tool, since I cannot print or change any of these stories. I am EXTREMELY disappointed and would not recommend ANYONE getting the kindle version

Just what I needed
I am currently working as a TA with pupils who find these social stories beneficial. I have carried out web searches on how to create my own social stories, but I find it difficult and time-consuming to do. I am also worried that my stories won't be as effective. The great thing about this book is it comes with a CD that allows you to edit or personalise and print any of the stories contained in the book. Also, there seems to be an appropriate story for the scenario's I have encountered to date. I am really pleased I purchased this book.

Invaluable resource for a parent
As a parent of a four year old boy with significant pragmatic language delay, sensory processing difficulties, fine motor skill and behavioural issues this book has been an invaluable resource.I keep it close by and find myself reading to my child from it regularly. He responds well to the stories and I have noticed improvement in his behaviours in less than a weeks time of reading a related story on a daily basis.I believe the stories are giving him self-confidence in social situations by giving him a plan/guide as how to act and respond in certain situations which regularly cause him anxiety and confusion. The book has also helped me feel greater confidence in my ability to help my child with his difficulties. It has empowered me during many difficult situations where I would otherwise be flailing in frustration.I really appreciate the CD included with the book and have used it to print off particular stories to send to school with him and on trips to Grandma and Grandpa's house.I have read a lot of books in attempting to understand and help my son and I can honestly say that as far as being a functional tool the book "The New Social Story Book" by Carol Gray is the one resource that has been the most positive and referred to in our home.I would not hesitate for a moment to recommend it to a parent or educator working with any child who struggles with social skills. The book is written with great compassion and understanding. It is easy to read, fast and effective to use. Really just an invaluable resource for a parent. The value of it far out weighing the cost.

Excellent resource
Great: the way the book is organized into sections for a specific skill you want to work on with students. We worked with two Grade 3 and one Grade 5 student in a small group - and the discussion was very lively. What surprised me most of all, was the way the students "connected" with the story - usually ASD students have limited skills in this area. Also very good, was the teacher's guide to using the stories. We are thinking of trying our hand at altering the story on the CD and seeing what the response is.Excellent: the choice of topics - so pertinent to student needs.
