Q: What is the expiration date on the cartridges being sold as of May 2019?

I purchased a re-arm kit several years ago and don't know what the current expiration period is. When I purchased it, the kit had several years remaining. Incidentally, the old unit I replaced had expired nearly ten years before I replaced it. I used my PFD frequently offshore and when I pulled the lanyard to test it, the 10-year old CO2 cylinder fired off perfectly and fully inflated the vest. In my opinion, expiration dates are very conservative and not a very good indicator of the likelihood that an arming kit will fire automatically...even if just purchased. I would worry more about the reputation of the manufacturer and look for any indications of unusual wear or abuse or tampering with the packaging. The only insurance this unit buys for you is the automatic inflation sequence if the user is not conscious or is unable to inflate the tubes by mouth.

It's not a direct answer to your question but this is what Mustang Survival Customer Service replied to me, "As for the retailers keeping "fresh stock" we do not regulate it. We try and educate our dealers to keep stock rotated. When you call a dealer to purchase the rearm kit request an updated rearm kit from them." were probably in the same boat.

Should be sometime in 2023, but if its a critical element to your purchase you may want to contact the seller directly beforehand. Mine was a full 5 years from date of purchase.

Q: why are these twice the price of all other 33-36gram kits?

This kit is for HIT auto hydrostatic vests, the type of vest that automatically inflates when you fall in the water. As such it includes not just a CO2 cartridge but also the hydrostatic control and so it costs more than a basic inflatable vest recharge kit.

Moderately easy to replace

Replaced the inflation mechanism on two of our Mustang offshore jackets.Tested the old, date-expired ones, and they fired when submerged just over a foot deep.Took a while to install but the instructions in the package are good.There are also re-arm instructions on the jacket floatation bag.They were dated very close to the purchase date so have the full time to replacement available.The Auto HIT system is good for sailing as getting drenched in the cockpit doesn’t inflate the jacket.

I have replaced this before and find it easy and the price was great. I really liked that the out date was several years . You never know when buying off the internet what the expiration date will be but this was great dating.

Replacement recharge kit for autoinflating PFD

Perfect fit and replacement for the original. The kits I received were also dated for 5 years from the date of purchase before they expire. I had read that some buyers that purchased from other vendors got kits that expired in only two or three years. Pay attention to the instructions or view the instructional videos on You-Tube if it is the first time you are replacing these.
