Old Farm Country Cookbook: Recipes, Menus, and Memories

I bought this book plus one more as a gift for my brother, he loved these books they are great fun to read.

Bought for my mom for Christmas and she has talked about this every time I have called her. She compliments the author on his ability to make you feel you are right there in the story with him. She also mentions the recipes bring back memories of her childhood. She grew up in a rural area and didn't have indoor plumbing until she was older. I recommend this if you like story cookbooks.

Jerry Apps and his daughter did an exceptional job writing this comprehensiveness not only recipe book but also memories of living on a small farm in Wisconsin in the years prior to electricity and modern conveniences. It was detailed and written to easily understand. I advise this to all who love to read of our past and make recipes using homegrown foods.

Many thanks to the authors for sharing these recipes and stories! I spent many, many hours sitting with my grandmother in her kitchen, listening to her stories about growing up during the Depression in rural Iowa. Her experiences were similar to the author’s (making butter in glass jars, using an ice box, etc.). Our family no longer has many of the recipes from that time period because my great-grandmother made them (cottage cheese, root beer, etc.) and Grandma didn’t know how. So I was thrilled to see recipes in this cookbook for those items, as well as learn more about the author’s experiences. I already recommended this book to my cousin, who plans to order a copy, and I will definitely be purchasing other books by this author.

I’ve never “read” a cookbook before. It is full of fun to read stories about where we all came from. Jerry is a master story teller. Fun to read the recipes too. The buckwheat pancakes are delicious.

What an excellent book...both the short descriptive stories and the recipes! I am working my way through preparing recipes. Grandma Witt's sugar cookies are fantastic!

The easily read chapters are filled with visual and culinary descriptions, which would be fun to read aloud and discuss. Our 3 generation family is finding lots to talk about, and have tried a number of the recipes. A nice reminder of where our food came/comes from and the small family farm life that was such a part of America. Very attractive look to the book.
