Q: Is the led always on, or only when there's a problem? this will be in a bedroom that needs to stay dark.

The LED indicator light will only turn on if the GFCI needs to be reset, or if the GFCI needs to be replaced. Otherwise, it will remain off at all times. Hope this helps!

With respect to manufactured electrical devices, I believe it is Underwriters Laboratory referring to the number they have assigned to the device.
