Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2009 [Old Version]

This program is just "OK". I actually don't like it as well as my 2005 version, but was told that 2005 wouldn't work with Vista and sooner or later I'm going to have to upgrade to Vista.I don't think they have much improved the program at all. They have added a game or two and the "Big Bang" games are fun but not to many of them in the game, at least that I like to play.Not sure I'd have bought it had I know what ie was like. Most of the interface on this one is pretty much like the 2005 version I already had.

This will do the trick. Wide variety of games to play. I picked a couple of favorites and played against or with a robot. You do get a decent game, easy to use and install to desktop. So load and go. I like canasta and I like backgammon so I purchased games with these included and played them for a month without getting bored. I would say yes to worth your money and the quality of Hoyle...even with a 2009 version.

This product is an upgrade of my favorite Game Disc. I have enjoyed the 2004 version for 6 years. It really fed my game addiction. So when I got a new computer I got this one---Wrong Move. It doesn't work on Windows 7. I had to go online to Hoyle website to download the newest version. I kept the 2009 disc for a friend to use but again was frustrated since their oldcomputer doesn't have a DVD drive. So this product has never been used. If it is anywhere near as good as the new one some other senior citizen will enjoy it as I will pass it on to someone with the right equipment.

Good it may be Windows but this program DOES NOT work with a Mac running Leopard. I loaded it and all it does is screw up the screen. None of the click buttons work, none of the individual games play and--worst of all--the game doesn't exit. To get out of it you have to shutdown AND pull the power plug for about 30 secs. DON'T BUY!!!!!

I mostly play the backgammon game. I have no complaints about the other games. While the game works well on my windows vista I have noticed a couple of irritating flaws. First, the computer player wins most of the first rolls. Also, whenever the players first blot is exposed, the computer hits it more often than not on the very next roll. In other words, the player is at a skewed disadvantage vs the computer. In order to win the first roll as a player, I have to quit and roll again multiple times. I'm searching for a more fair non Hoyle backgammon game. The other games are fine.

We have Hoyle Table Games 2004 and mostly I play Yacht (Yahtzee), Gravity Tiles or a weird and complex word game called Double Cross. We bought this 2009 version because my son (who has his own computer) kept pinching my disc. So, he has the new one and I have the old one.There are a lot more games on the new one, but nothing really spectacular. It's as if they just fished around to come up with quantity over quality. My son doesn't even play it any longer. I realize different people will have different tastes, but for us all the new stuff was just excessive and useless.

If you already have the 2008 version, stick with that and forget about this 2009 version. If you don't have 2008, buy that instead of 2009. The only new games are some Big Bang games, and they are hardly enough to recommend this "update". You are forced to play with a snarky little Geni (I guess that is what he is), and these classic games are neither particulary interesting or engaging. One additional problem is that the CD is a little buggy (some stuttering and the "orange" screen of death after playing for a while). There is nothing new here to recommend this 2009 version.

Some of the games look like they will be good for my elderly mother, although she has not tried them yet. There are so many that the disk will be worth it even if she likes just a few of them. She can play these without the constant ads and scamming of games online, which is a big plus, and they are different from the online games that she has tired of. The graphics are low-resolution and the general feel is dated, but that is no problem for a 90-year-old! Other reviewers report that the disk must be in the optical disk drive for the game to work. I did not verify that. To avoid that inconvenience, I used public-domain software (WinCDEmu) to make an .iso file version of the disk and to mount the .iso file; I then ejected the physical disk and installed the from that mounted "virtual optical disk". The games work fine without the physical disk in the optical drive (on a Windows 7 PC), including after rebooting. In reading the disk to make the .iso file, the software found many bad sectors on the disk, which might be part of the copy-protection scheme that requires the disk in the drive. But installing from the resulting .iso file worked anyway, and the few games and features that I have tested so far have all worked as intended. I don't know for sure that this more complicated approach is needed, but it did work, so my mother can just click an icon on her desktop to start the games without having to insert the physical disk.
