What I also loved is the combination of existential questions and the everyday life of a small, gossipy provincial town. The story revolves around a local conspiracy and the infiltration of radical nihilism into a small community, and knowing it is based on true historical events just adds another layer... It makes you wonder how much of the human behaviour and local drama depicted in the novel are also based on true events around the real murder that happened in Moscow. When it comes to the reading experience, I really enjoyed Michael Katz's translation. I think this version hits a great sweet spot. It would be a fantastic choice for anyone. Note on the physical copy: The book arrived in great condition, although the front cover started to peel a bit too soon in my opinion. This fierce allegorical tale is prophetic of the present bout of nihilism which also threatens a "... triumph [that] will stand very far from the Kingdom of Heaven". In the words of another writer – A fool's dream oft is a wise man's nightmare, Yet visions render saints and madmen joy; As wak'd all at accord desire the fair, Though some to tender, others to destroy.
